Scientists managed to block the Ebola infection in an early step to make a vaccine for this infection. They blocked it in the cell-culture experiments. The Ebola epidemic in the West Africa is the largest in history. It has begun in December 2013 and until then, it infected 27.678 (according to the CDC) people. The death count is 11.276. However, the WHO (World Health Organization), announced that Liberia is free from Ebola. On the other side, other countries still have this problem.
The global aid in prevention and treating the infection has failed, according to the analysis. Researchers test several vaccines for the Ebola virus at this moment. But, none of them, is available for clinical use. Now, scientists have found a solution for developing successful vaccine.
Researchers from the UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch) have found a new approach. According to lead author, Prof. Robert Davey, they focused on host cells instead on the virus. In addition, he said that a virus is a cell. It also needs certain proteins in order to replicate. If those proteins are unavailable to the virus, it cannot replicate. The point is to block those proteins for a short time.
In order to test their theory, researchers analyzed cells treated with the siRNA (small interfering Ribonucleic acid). It is used to induce the silencing of one protein gene. They discovered 735 genes that may produce proteins that are critical for the Ebola virus. They also created a type of the Ebola virus that behaves like the real virus, but it isn’t harmful as the real Ebola virus. They concluded that the Ebola virus can be blocked when certain proteins are blocked.
